End of Summer 2023

Reflecting on a Year of Growth, Learning, and Transformation

Even though fall lands closer to the end of the year on the calendar, I think of it as a time of renewal, starting fresh, a way to begin new personal growth. Blame it on too many years of schooling. As another summer comes to a close, it's only natural to reflect on the journey that has brought us to this point. The past twelve months have been a whirlwind of experiences, challenges, and revelations, more clearly marking the paths I should continue.

Education, Some Successes, Many Missteps

I officially decided to go back to school in the fall. I studied various subjects in exercise science and recovery, trigonometry, and physics. While I did learn many things, some even useful in my career, the experience was ultimately a negative one for me. Higher education, at least in this setting, was not what it once was, and I’ve decided not to pursue a graduate degree at this point. You can read more details about that here.

I committed this past year to also learning techniques and modalities that will help me in my practice. In 2023, I attended the AMTA National convention. This gathering of thousands of licensed massage therapists allows conversations, community, and many continuing education courses. I had the chance to hear from many important figures in and out of the industry, including Olympic Champion Michael Phelps. At this conference, I also took courses to further my private practice, including techniques for plantar fasciitis, reflexology, sports massage, and pain management.

Earlier in the year, I refreshed my skills in prenatal massage. This course taught us what’s fact and what’s fiction, and also reviewed post-natal massage. When it comes to massage and pregnancy, there are so many detrimental myths out there. As an evidence based practitioner, I am proud to stay diligent in my practice, especially when it comes to working with expectant mothers who need the work.

In addition, I’ve purchased some new equipment. Some of this equipment is already in use while others will be in short order. Keep an eye out for specialty services including things like: cupping, steam, scrubs, and dry brushing!

Empowering Others: The Journey into Teaching Continuing Education

One of the most rewarding experiences of this year has been my foray into teaching continuing education courses. Years ago, I found some success and fulfillment as a massage therapy instructor at McCann Institute of Business and Technology. Since the pandemic, the decision to share my knowledge and skills with others felt like a natural progression. It was a chance to empower fellow learners who were seeking to enhance their expertise, whether to advance in their careers or simply satisfy their curiosity.

Did you know that licensed massage therapists in the state of Pennsylvania are required to upkeep 24 hours of continuing education every two years? Finding affordable and qualifying courses in this area had been a challenge for a very long time. My goal is to bring continuing education that is high quality and affordable to the local area.

Transforming Spaces: Renovations on the Business

A sole proprietor business had long been a cornerstone of my identity, a canvas through which I expressed my creativity and innovation. This year, I decided to take that expression to the next level by embarking on a series of renovations.

The process of redecorating the business space served as a metaphor for a renewed passion in my business. With each wall painted and fixture chosen, I felt a renewed sense of purpose and determination to create a space that not only served the needs of my customers but also embodied my evolving vision.

Looking Ahead

As I sit here reflecting on the journey of the past year, I am filled with gratitude for the experiences that have shaped my path. From the decision to part ways with formal education to the joy of teaching and the transformation of my business space, each step has contributed to my excitement for the present and future.

Looking ahead, I am excited to continue weaving this tapestry, embracing the unknown twists and turns that the future holds. I am reminded that growth often emerges from unexpected places, and the most meaningful achievements are often the result of daring to venture beyond the familiar.

To those who have been a part of this journey – whether as fellow travelers, students, or supporters – I extend my heartfelt thanks. Here's to the next chapter, a blank page awaiting the ink of new experiences, challenges, and triumphs. As we look into the fall season, I eagerly await what lies ahead.
